IndyCar Enforces Ban on ‘Aggressive’ Move Leading to Newgarden’s Indy 500 Win

9 months ago By Sports Desk

IndyCar has announced it will ban the “aggressive” maneuvers that claimed Josef Neugarden’s victory in the 2023 Indy 500. The driver’s decisive move to defend his lead on the final lap by going down the pit lane and returning to the track would not be effective. Allowed in future editions of Legendary events.

The NTT IndyCar Series executive rule changes are designed to avoid situations like Newgarden’s daring maneuver that occurred on the final lap of the iconic race. IndyCar President Jay Frye explained that while Newgarden did not violate the rules in 2023, the series is taking proactive steps to limit similar aggressive actions in future races.

During the controversial maneuver, Newgarden fell down the point pit entry line, temporarily leaving the track before suddenly returning to the racing surface. The trick, designed to break the aerodynamic vacuum and make overtaking difficult, has sparked controversy over safety and regulations.

Starting with the next Indy 500 on May 26, IndyCar will ban any aggressive moves like Newgarden, specifically discouraging drivers from racing below the dashed pit entry line unless they are actually pitted for a scheduled pit stop.

Newgarden, who was not penalized for his stunt in the 2023 Indy 500, supported the series’ decision, acknowledging that the limits are being tested but that the rules are essential to ensure the safety and integrity of the race.

The ban aims to maintain competitiveness, but at the same time it sets clear limits on movements that may create unnecessary risks. Jay Fry stressed that IndyCar continues to evolve its rules and regulations in response to the ever-changing dynamics of racing, striking a balance between on-track excitement and driver safety.

The decision to ban aggressive moves is part of a series of revisions to IndyCar’s rules of the game, demonstrating the series’ continued commitment to enhancing the integrity of the game and providing exciting yet safe racing for IndyCar drivers and passionate fans.
