Jorge Martin Relishes Early Title Lead: “Hoping to Extend It Beyond the First 24 Hours”

Jorge Martin, a standout rider at the start of the 2024 MotoGP season, took a brilliant victory in the first sprint race to confirm his position as the leader of the championship. The Spaniard led from start to finish, beating rivals such as Brad Binder and Aleix Espargero.

Starting from pole, Martin faced early pressure from Binder, but managed the pace of the race adeptly to secure victory. However, despite the victory, the driver did not run away from the challenges, he had to face similar instability problems as in the pre-season tests.

“It was a fun race, a great Saturday to start the season,” said Martin. “I am very happy. There is no doubt that we have a lot of work to do tomorrow as I had some problems in the race that we need to improve on, given that it will be a much longer race.”

As for the specific issues, Martin chose not to go into detail, but admitted they were similar to the challenges they faced in pre-season testing. Still, he was confident that if solved, he could significantly increase his performance.

“I don’t want to get into too much trouble, because I don’t know how it can be. I had some similar problems with the tests. Everything was fine at the weekend, but not today, so we have to understand better and take a step forward. Once we solve this problem, I know I can be a lot faster. It is what it is, but we’ll try to make the most of it.”

Despite the challenges he faced during the race, Jorge Martin now finds himself in the privileged position of leading the World Championship. However, the driver approached this points lead with humility, stating that it was not his biggest concern and that his most important goal was to stay competitive and achieve a podium finish at the next race.

“It’s a great feeling, for sure,” Martin said of leading the championship for the second time in his career. “I hope I can last more than 24 hours. That’s not my biggest concern now. I just want to be competitive and get on the podium tomorrow.”
