Verstappen’s Former Trainer Admits: “I Didn’t Even Know Who Max Verstappen Was” in Rare Admission

9 months ago By Sports Desk

Max Verstappen’s former coach, Bradley Scanes, admitted in a recent statement that he did not know who the Red Bull driver was before he started working with him. Scanes said he did not know much about the world of Formula One and did not know the big players apart from Lewis Hamilton before joining. This rare admission came during an appearance on the “Red Flag Podcast.”

Discussing the beginning of his partnership with Verstappen, Scanes said: “Before I started working with Max, I really didn’t know anything about the world of motorsport and F1. I didn’t even know who Max Verstappen was. I did a lot of Google searches to update myself, to keep up with everything. Hamilton’ I knew it was successful, but that’s it.”

This startling admission highlights just how unfamiliar Scanes was to the world of F1 at first. However, he quickly adapted and made a significant contribution to Verstappen’s success, as they captured three titles throughout their partnership.

Scanes also shared information about the relationship he developed with Verstappen; He described it as a relaxed, honest and direct relationship. He emphasized the importance of openness and loyalty, stating that these values are fundamental for the Verstappens and their closest circle.

With Scanes and Verstappen parting ways at the end of the 2023 F1 season, Scanes decided to devote more time to his family. Despite this, the coach positively reflected on his time with the Red Bull driver and highlighted the success they achieved together.

Scanes’ move to F1 was remarkable, especially considering he initially had little knowledge of the sport. His story highlights how important adaptability and teamwork are to achieve success.

Despite Verstappen’s decision not to retain Scanes’ services from the 2024 season, the pair’s partnership has left a lasting mark, showing how effective collaboration can improve performance in a competitive environment like F1.
